The Music Industry

The Business of MusicWelcome to our section on the UK Music Industry.

We are still very much constructing this part so unfortunately there isn't much to look at just yet!

Our intent is to offer user friendly pages that help the reader explore key music business issues, but in a way that makes things easy to follow and understand. Unlike like other sites, we do not intend to baffle readers with long winded explanations on "copyright" or "royalty accounting". Rather, MBR Online will draw on its training experience to "illustrate" how things work through practical flow diagrams and interactive exercises (there will be some wording though!).

For example, bands will be able to calculate what "advance" they "may" need and then see how many records they will have to sell to pay it all back! We will look at the money-go-round to show all income possibilities from music, and there will also be an easy reference FAQ section.

For now though, we offer two pages:

The first illustrates a basic music business principal: how money is generated! The page includes a flow diagram that demonstrates who is entitled to what income from the sale and / or performance of a record (this illustration was developed by Eric Longley, one of our key music industry expert speakers).

Our second page offers an easy-to-follow look up table of all the Royalty Collection Societies and other Music Industry Organisations that are relevant to you.

If you have any comments or suggestions you want to feed back to us on the things you would like to see in this section, we would very much like to hear from you. Please do so by email or you can contact MBR by phone, fax or letter
